SixtyfourpercentofAmericansbelieveeconomyisstableorgettingbettercomparedto33percentlastyear;Savingsandretirementaretopareasoffinancialconcern
WILMINGTON,Del.,September18,2012-MoreAmericansbelievethattheirpersonalfinancesandtheeconomyarestableorimprovingthandidayearago,accordingtotheannualChasePulseoftheConsumerSurvey.ThemajorityofAmericans,64percent,believethattheeconomyiseitheratbottomandstableorhasalreadybottomedoutandisgettingbetter,comparedtoonly33percentlastyear.The2012ChasePulseoftheConsumerSurveytakesacomprehensivelookatAmericans'financialhabitsandtheirattitudestowardtheeconomyandtheirownfinances.Thesurveyrevealsthat65percentofconsumersbelievethattheirpersonalfinanceshavealreadybottomedoutandareeitherconstantorgettingbettercomparedtoonly56percentatthistimelastyear.SavingsRemainsPrimaryConcernforConsumersWhenitcomestomanagingtheirpersonalfinances,nearlythree-quarters(74percent)ofAmericansaremostconcernedabouthavingenoughmoneyinsavings.Yet,only36percentofconsumershaveputmoremoneyintosavingssincetheeconomicdownturn.Nearlytwo-thirdsofconsumers(64percent)saytheirsecondbiggestfinancialconcernissavingforretirement.Despitetheirconcern,only34percentofconsumershavebeensavingmoremoneyforretirementsincetheeconomicdownturn.Consumersarelessconcernedwithaffordingshorttermexpensesthantheyareabouttheirsavingsandfinancialfutures.Justfourin10(40percent)consumersareconcernedaboutpayingtheirmonthlycreditcardbillsandloans,andmortgageorrentpayments.Still,Americansareconstantlylookingforwaystosavemoney.Morethanhalf(53percent)ofconsumersareconcernedaboutsavingmoneyontheireverydaypurchases."We'reencouragedthatconsumersthinktheeconomyandtheirpersonalfinancesareontheupswing,butthereisstillworktobedone,"saidEileenSerra,chiefexecutiveofficer,ChaseCardServices."Consumerscontinuetoneedthecorrectfinancialtoolsandservicestobettermanagetheireverydayexpenses-thatisacriticalfirststeptogainingfullcontrolovertheirfinancialfuture."ControllingDailyExpensesAmericanshavechangedtheirbehaviorsasaresultoftheeconomicdownturnandhavegainedbettercontroloftheirdailyexpenses,accordingtotheChasePulseoftheConsumerSurvey.Nearlyeightin10(78percent)consumerssaidtheyhavechangedtheirspendinghabitsandarenowspendinglessoneverydayitemsasawaytocope.Tohelpgettheirfinancesinorder,morethanthree-fifths(61percent)ofconsumershavebeenpayingdowntheircreditcardbalancefasterandmorethanhalf(54percent)havecreatedamonthlybudget.Whenbudgetingforanunexpected$1,500expense,nearlyhalf(49percent)ofrespondentswouldpayfortheexpensewithacreditcard.Halfoftheseconsumerswouldpaythecreditcardbillinfullandtheotherhalfwouldpayitoffovertime.Ofthoseplanningtopaythecreditcardbilloffovertime,83percentofthemwouldhaveaplantopayitoff.Whenitcomestomanagingeverydaypurchases,45percentofrespondentssaytheyarefinanciallymotivatedtoensurethatthey'regettingthemostfortheirmoney.PlanningforMajorPurchasesWithdailyexpensesundercontrol,61percentofAmericansarenowconcernedaboutmanagingmajorpurchases.Buyinganewcar(38percent),takingadreamvacation(24percent)andbuyingahomeorcondo(20percent)arethetopthreelargeexpensesthatAmericansanticipateexperiencingwithinthenextfiveyears.Therewasan11percentincreaseanda13percentincreaseinthenumberofconsumersplanningtobuyacarorbuyahomeorcondo,respectively,withinthenextfiveyearscomparedtolastyear.BudgetingWithTechnologyThesurveyalsorevealsthat70percentofAmericansfindonlinebanking,creditcardwebsitesorbothtobemostvaluablein
